Sailing Back to the US

Currently delivering Terminal Leave from Guadeloupe to Florida

Approaching Saint Martin on Terminal Leave

After finishing the Mini Transat in Guadeloupe, the next goal is getting Terminal Leave back home to Annapolis. Jane has joined me for this part of the adventure as we initially sail to Stewart, Florida. Later this spring I will sail the boat back to Annapolis.

The delivery route involves navigating around many islands

The post race time in Guadeloupe consisted of events like the awards presentation above. Each skipper was brought up on stage for the celebration.

There was also plenty of boat work that kept us busy preparing for the 1,500 mile delivery

After a few days of work, we found a small 3.3 hp motor and attached a new motor mount without drilling any holes in the boat! We were able to secure the mount to the hydrogenerator bracket. The motor is just strong enough to move the boat in and out of a dock, without being too heavy for the mount set up.

Pulling into our first mooring field after an initial 25 hour sail from Guadeloupe to just NW of Saint Barths. This little island is a uninhabited nature preserve.

The following day we pulled into Marigot Bay in Saint Martin. You can barely see Terminal Leave in this mooring field surrounded by much bigger catamarans.

Heading into shore by dinghy with Terminal Leave secured to a mooring

Did we mention the dinghy is also mini?! Just 2.35 m long but holds us both and folds down into a bag when we are sailing.

As we were leaving Saint Martin to sail 800 nm to the Bahamas the autopilot stopped working. We quickly turned around and pulled into a dock to troubleshoot. When it looked like we could not fix the problem, we moved back onto our original mooring.

The following day hydraulic technicians came out to Terminal Leave by boat and removed the pump. Water had finally damaged the motor, which needed to be replaced. The next day it was quickly switched out and we have a working autopilot again!

Want to help? You can still donate to support costs like this repair

While the sunsets here are beautiful, it is time for us to move on. One last sunset here tonight, then setting sail in the morning. We decided to wait the night since there was going to be a large no wind zone throughout the evening and early morning.

The detailed After Action Report blog posts will be completed once I am back in the US. Looking forward to sharing more details and videos from the second leg of the race!
